Composer and pianist Maria Kallionpaa’s work Climb! was a duet for a human musician and robotic (Yamaha Disklavier) piano. Studies with professional pianists informed a taxonomy to express the ambiguities involved in deliberately embracing failure as a source of improvisation through strategies such as ‘taming’, ‘riding’, ‘gaming’ and becoming’ the system.
